What’s this all about?
In G-Force, we get a live action/CGI talking animal picture about a group of Guinea Pigs, a mole, and a fly who are part of an FBI-funded experiment to turn them into secret infiltrator agents.
As with all modern CGI talking animal films, we get perplexing cast of stars, and an abundance of jokes and gags aimed squarely at an 8-year-old demographic.
The main plot involved our stars escaping from the FBI, then joining back up in the “regular” world to stop a global terrorist plot involving murderous household appliances.
Who is Nick in this one?
Nick plays “Speckles,” a nearly-blind mole who is a technological wizard.
Brace yourselves.
Nick’s performance in this is excellent.
Seriously, in a genre that I have previously lambasted for having celebrities just talk in their normal voices instead of using voice actors, Nick delivers a performance that Sarah literally didn’t recognize as Nick Cage.
His voice work was unique, convincing, and enjoyable.
Who else is in this one?
As previously mentioned, this movie is chock-a-block with stars no 8-year-old could ever care about. Let’s start with the “voice actors.”
Sam Rockwell (Not married to Veronica Mars) plays “Darwin,” the leader of G-Force. He’s fine.
Tracy Morgan (“Tracy Jordan” from 30 Rock) plays “Blaster,” a Guinea pig who shouts his lines like he’s reading them (at a second-grade level) for the first time. It’s literally every Tracy Morgan performance. Some of it is funny, just like every Tracy Morgan performance.
Penelope Cruz (something with Tom Cruise, maybe?) plays “Juarez,” the girly female Guinea pig. She’s obsessed with creating romantic connections with the other Guinea pigs. This character is absolutely pointless. Did the 8-year-old audience really want Penelope Cruz as a hyper-sexualized Guinea pig?
Jon Favreau (“Gutter” from PCU) plays Hurley, a fat, stinky Guinea pig who farts a lot.
Steve Buscemi (All of those Adam Sandler movies) plays “Bucky,” an insane pet store hamster. He’s pretty funny in the role.
The live-action cast is rounded out by Zack Galifianakis and Will Arnett, neither of whom really bring anything to the film, or are of any consequence. It’s really kind of a shame, because they’re both very funny, but they’re just two dimensional, bland, stock characters, here.
Did you see that?
In addition to the cast above, G-Force features the inimitable Niecy Nash as a crazy pet store owner. I love Niecy Nash. I think she’s hilarious.
For some reason, in G-Force she has two lines, which she delivers in Spanish, before delivering the same lines in English. Why does she do that? Is she pretending to be Latina? Is the character pretending to be Latina? Was the role written for someone else? Did a bunch of this character’s scenes get cut, leaving this bizarre situation?
It’s weird. Why would you hire a talented, African American improv artist and actress to deliver two lines in a fake Mexican accent? -Michael
There was this scene where Tracy Morgan’s Guinea pig was doing stunts in a remote controlled car. It was ridiculous, but the child in me loved it. -Sarah
What were Nick’s best parts?
I want to reiterate, here, that Nick’s performance in this movie was exceptional. He was the best performer in this film, and this may be one of his better performances. Picking a best, however, was easy. In a flashback scene, Nick’s character sees his family being exterminated, and just before his death, the character’s father (also played by Nick) says “if you ever get the chance to bring humanity to its knees, do it!”
The line was hilarious, and Nick delivered it completely differently than he’d done all of the other lines. It was great. -Michael
Nick was incredibly good in this and Michael is right on the best scene, but since I can’t just say ditto, I’m going to call out the scene where Nick realizes he shouldn’t have done what he did and regrets being the bad guy. It was full of emotion and felt somehow real coming from a blind CGI mole with a wacky voice. -Sarah
“What were Nick’s worst parts?
Shockingly, Nick didn’t really have any standout “bad” scenes. During the first missions exfiltration, he’s chased by dogs and has to be rescued by the others. During that scene, he whines and whimpers a lot. It’s irritating, but it suits the character and the situation.-Michael
There really aren’t any bad scenes. Nick did a bang up job the entire time. -Sarah
How was the movie?
I have opined at length about the stupidity of modern CGI animated films that are filled with flash-in-the-pan celebrities. All of my complaints in those rants hold true here.
However, this movie, overall, was quite enjoyable.
The story was well-structured, the characters were, for the most part, decent, the action was good, and production level was high. It isn’t Citizen Kane, or even Christmas Vacation, but I watched it for the first time as an adult, with no children present, and enjoyed it. -Michael
The movie was great, if you are looking for a kids movie that you won’t mind watching as an adult. I’m kind of surprised it wasn’t more popular. -Sarah
Yeah, but did you like it?
I did. God help me, I enjoyed G-Force. -Michael
I loved it! -Sarah
Where can I watch it?
You can watch it for free on Tubi.
